The Interview

As each day drew nearer to my interview, I continued to stress and ponder. The night before, instead of sleeping, I mentally answered any and all potential questions they might ask.

I finally fell asleep around 3am.

The drive there, I continued to pray and hope I wouldn’t make a fool out of myself. I also put two copies of books on my passenger seat before leaving home to make sure I wouldn’t forget to bring them with me.

Once I arrived, I was taken to their “green room” which was painted a warm beige. It was small, almost triangular shaped with three chairs. It overlooked the studio, though, so we could watch the show live.

Two others scheduled for interviews joined me. One was a young lady who works for our local forestry department, and she gave information on an upcoming Arbor Day event. The other was a young man who owns a company that connects other companies with people in India who do background tasks (such as basic accounting). He caters to those who can’t afford full-time employees for those particular jobs.

The nice part about being in the room with them is we each practiced on each other what we wanted to talk about before our actual interview.

I was last of the three to be interviewed, which I appreciated. That gave me the opportunity to watch the other two, and how everything was structured.

When my turn came, the sound man (who was also the cameraman), retrieved me and showed me how to use the clip-on microphone. He then sat me down at a table where I was filmed for a few seconds and introduced as the next segment.

They then sat me in a chair next to the two hosts of KX NewsStudio 701, Amber Schatz and Katie Varga. They then informed me what would happen next before the segment began. I asked how they even found me, because two others in my writers group were also invited to be interviewed.

Turns out Amber found our names from a book reading event my writers group held last year at our local library right before last Christmas.

As usual, once the interview began, my nerves settled. I did stumble a bit, said “um” a lot apparently (no surprise there), but I ended up having a good time. Both Amber and Katie asked me some really good questions, including how I came up with the title of my book.

The only real challenge was trying to get past an unrelenting dry mouth.

Once it ended, they each thanked me and complimented me on how well I did. Katie even said, “I almost lost track of time, and I felt like I was talking to a friend.” Of all the compliments, those meant the most.

I gave them each a copy of my book as a thank you for the opportunity.

As I was leaving the studio, the cameraman stopped me and asked about Havok (another subject I brought up during the interview). He’s apparently interested in writing stories, so I hope to see some from him soon.

A few days later, I received an alert from Google that my name had come up in a website search.

To my utter surprise, KX News had posted a small article about my interview and even included the video (which is about five minutes long).

I’m sure they do that for all authors they’ve interviewed, but I was gratified and grateful nonetheless.

So if I’m ever asked to be interviewed again, I’ll be more than happy to do it, and with far less angst.
