Lessons of Social Media

As many of you know, X (formerly Twitter) is my favorite social media platform. I used to call it a dumpster fire in the middle of a cesspool, but since Elon Musk took it over, it has improved.

That’s not to say it can’t be awful at times, but that’s the nature of any place where humans of all stripes and opinions gather.

I made a comment about a pastor who, based on several things I saw about her, is a false teacher. She gave a sermon at a church in DC (I forget which one, and I’m too lazy to look) where President Trump, his family, and others attended. She used the pulpit to basically lecture him on how he’s mistreating certain groups and destroying the planet, etc. Typical leftist talking points.

A lot of people on X were not, shall we say, impressed. In fact, I received so many critical comments, I couldn’t keep up.

I realized several things:

One, I should have been more clear in what I meant, because I do know a short comment can’t convey everything a person is thinking, and it can be misinterpreted or misconstrued. Next time I need to think a bit longer and formulate a clearer response before posting.

Second, like most people on social media, I wanted a lot of “followers.” After all, I’m arrogant enough to think my words matter and should be read by many far and wide.

After over 15 years on X, I have just over 1200 followers. Part of it is I don’t live on X, and I only follow people who interest me (which is sitting at just over 1400). After trying to respond to the many comments on X last night, I decided I no longer want thousands upon thousands of followers.

To me, social media is about being social, to engage with others, not merely speak at thousands of faceless people who happen to like what I post. I want to talk to people, to have actual conversations, to learn, to teach, and especially to laugh.

So here I will remain. A little tadpole in a massive pond and enjoying my obscurity.
