Gratitude Day 9: What is something I am grateful to have learned?
One of my college instructors once said, “If you learn something new every day, it’s never a wasted day.”
Or to quote Socrates, “The only true wisdom is knowing you know nothing.”
I love to learn, and I hope I never reach a point where I think I know everything I want or need to know. Doing so only leads to stagnation and hubris.
Learning new things keeps us humble, because the newly gained knowledge reminds us that we indeed know nothing. Or at least not enough.
So what is something I’m grateful to have learned recently? That onion juice can cure ear infections. Yesterday I woke up with an ear ache. I proceeded to worsen throughout the day. I happened to mention it during my bible study, and one of the ladies told me to buy an onion, pulverize it and drop a few drops into the ear.
I tried it and hoped the pain would subside soon. It didn’t until this morning, but I’m okay with that. The fact it felt even a little better is enough for me. It still hurts a little (thankfully not nearly as bad), so I added more drops again tonight and will continue to do so until the infection is gone.
Spending less than a dollar and smelling like an onion all night sure beats taking time off work and spending a few hundred dollars on doctors and antibiotics.
So what “old wives tales” have you discovered that actually work?
