I posted on social media that my nonfiction book is in the hands of a self-publishing company and distributor called Ingram Spark, and that I should receive the digital proof in a few days.
I revealed nothing else, and one person said I should at least give the title and a teaser.
She’s not wrong, but at the same time, I didn’t want to give too much away. Gotta keep the interest going until it’s published, ya know.
So I thought about it. How do I talk about the book without giving away too much prior to publication?
The second question some might consider is: what makes me believe I have the “bona fides” (expertise) to write nonfiction? After all, I am as ordinary as anyone can be.
Then it occurred to me. Ordinary is the point.
Ordinary, if done right, is interesting, because it’s relatable.
I also don’t consider myself wise by any measure, but in my fifty-odd years of life I have gained a few nuggets of wisdom.
And that’s what I hope readers will find in my book: Ordinary, yet interesting nuggets of wisdom.
In case you’re wondering, “Ordinary but Interesting” is not the title of my book.
